We are trying to figure out if selling stock to cover the debt is a wise idea (with the intention she'll "pay herself back" over time instead of giving her interest monies to the bank). Does it make sense to sell the stock, risk capital gains, and be rid of the debt accumulating at something like a 14% rate? Will the capital gains tax obliterate the benefit of being debt free?

The US dollar is now in a free-fall. The M3 data shows inflation at 15% and a GDP of less than 1%. This inflation rate is increasing rapidly and is showing no signs of declining.

I am looking to get entirely out of US dollars. I would like to open an offshore account so that I can move everything into yen, Swiss francs, and yuan and trade my account like a regular brokerage account -- buying stocks, ETFs, CEFs, etc. on the US exchanges as well as foreign exchanges.

Any ideas?

I am also interested in working with an overseas broker that I can open an account with, who will allow me to trade a "multicurrency sandwich."

HSBC bank in Singapore allows Americans to open a multicurrency account that will let you move all your US dollars into up to 9 other currencies. The Hong Kong HSBC branch will let you move into Chinese yuan. You do not have to be present to open these accounts, although you will likely need help from the Buffalo NY branch of HSBC to communicate with these foreign branches properly.

I am willing to share more information such as this if others can answer my initial questions about offshore accounts and multicurrency sandwiches. Please post web links or post phone numbers/email address.

Thanks in advance!

I am completely ignorant and I have no clue what to do with this. Can someone help me out? Here's a summary of the cover letter I got when I was hired:

Pursuant to the terms and conditions of the company's General Plan (the 'Plan'), you have been granted an Incentive Stock Option to purchase 500 shares (the 'Option') of stock as outlined below.

Granted to: my name
Grant Date: June 5, 2006
Options Granted: 500
Option Price per Share: $7.75000
Total Cost to Exercise: $3,875.00
Expiration Date: June 5, 2011
Vesting Schedule: 4 year vesting
100 on 06/05/2007
125 on 06/05/2008
125 on 06/05/2009
150 on 06/05/2010

By my signature below, I hereby acknowledge receipt of this Option... blah blah blah.

Then there is a 10 page document outlining the conditions of the "stock incentive plan".

Someone please explain wtf is going on with all this! Has this stock been given to me? Do I need to buy it? What's the deal with vesting?

Sorry for the retarded questions, but I was a Physics major in college. :P

It says individual investors are more bearish now than they were at the 1998 bottom but not quite as bearish as they were for the October 2002 to March 2003 bottoming process. It looks quite a bit like mid 1994 which is when I think technology stocks were similarly out of favor. Buying tech stocks in 1993-1995 allowed me to semi retire at the age of 41 in 1998 so this could be quite exciting if we see a repeat given the stocks in my newsletter explore portfolio.
Monday view: Paulson re-activates secretive support team to prevent markets meltdown
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard Last Updated: 12:09am GMT 30/10/2006

Judging by their body language, the US authorities believe the roaring bull market this autumn is just a suckers' rally before the inevitable storm hits.

Hank Paulson, the market-wise Treasury Secretary who built a $700m fortune at Goldman Sachs, is re-activating the 'plunge protection team' (PPT), a shadowy body with powers to support stock index, currency, and credit futures in a crash.

Otherwise known as the working group on financial markets, it was created by Ronald Reagan to prevent a repeat of the Wall Street meltdown in October 1987.

advertisementMr Paulson says the group had been allowed to languish over the boom years. Henceforth, it will have a command centre at the US Treasury that will track global markets and serve as an operations base in the next crisis.

The top brass will meet every six weeks, combining the heads of Treasury, Federal Reserve, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and key exchanges.

Mr Paulson has asked the team to examine "systemic risk posed by hedge funds and derivatives, and the government's ability to respond to a financial crisis".

"We need to be vigilant and make sure we are thinking through all of the various risks and that we are being very careful here. Do we have enough liquidity in the system?" he said, fretting about the secrecy of the world's 8,000 unregulated hedge funds with $1.3trillion at their disposal.

The PPT was once the stuff of dark legends, its existence long denied. But ex-White House strategist George Stephanopoulos admits openly that it was used to support the markets in the Russia/LTCM crisis under Bill Clinton, and almost certainly again after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

"They have an informal agreement among major banks to come in and start to buy stock if there appears to be a problem," he said.

"In 1998, there was the Long Term Capital crisis, a global currency crisis. At the guidance of the Fed, all of the banks got together and propped up the currency markets. And they have plans in place to consider that if the stock markets start to fall," he said.

The only question is whether it uses taxpayer money to bail out investors directly, or merely co-ordinates action by Wall Street banks as in 1929. The level of moral hazard is subtly different.

Mr Paulson is not the only one preparing for trouble. Days earlier, the SEC said it aims to slash margin requirements for institutions and hedge funds on stocks, options, and futures to as low as 15pc, down from a range of 25pc to 50pc.

The ostensible reason is to lure back hedge funds from London, but it is odd policy to license extra leverage just as the Dow hits an all-time high and the VIX 'fear' index nears an all-time low – signalling a worrying level of risk appetite. The normal practice across the world is to tighten margins to cool over-heated asset markets.

The move is so odd that conspiracy buffs are already accusing SEC chief Chris Cox of juicing the markets to help stop the implosion of the Bush presidency.

As it happens, I used to eat Mexican enchiladas with Mr Cox 20 years ago at a dining club in Washington, where California Reaganauts gathered to plot the defeat of Communism. Die-hard Republican he may be, but I can think of nobody less likely to betray the public trust in such a way.

So one is tempted to ask if Mr Paulson and Mr Cox know something that we do not: whether other hedge funds are in the same sinking boat as Amaranth Advisers and Vega Asset Management, keel-hauled by bets on natural gas and bonds.

Or whether currency traders with record short positions on the Japanese yen and the Swiss franc are about to learn the perils of the Carry Trade, a high-stakes game of chicken where you bet against fundamentals with high leverage to make a quick profit. Everybody knows it will blow up if the dollar goes into free fall.

They had a fright last week when US growth for the third quarter came in at just 1.6pc, and new house prices plummeted 9.7pc year-on-year in the sharpest drop since the property crash of 1981.

The dollar dived from 119.65 to 117.57 yen in a heartbeat. With $2.9trillion of derivatives now trading daily on the currency markets alone – according to the Bank for International Settlements – is this the start of the most vicious short squeeze ever seen?

The futures markets have priced in a 77pc chance of a flawless soft-landing for America's obese economy, now living 7pc of GDP beyond its means off foreign creditors. They are counting on moderating oil prices, and – a contradiction? – another year of torrid world growth. Nice if you can get it.

They have not begun to price in the risk of recession, typically entailing a drop in the S&P 500 stock index of 28pc from peak to trough. Evidently, the equity markets assume the Fed can and will rescue them by slashing rates in time, if necessary.

They should examine a recent report by the New York Fed warning that whenever the yield on 10-year Treasuries has fallen below 3-month yields for a stretch lasting over three months, it has led to each of the six recessions since 1968.

The full crunch hits 12 months later as the delayed effects of monetary tightening feed through, even if the Fed starts easing frantically in the meantime. By then it is too late. "There have been no false signals," it said.

As of last week, the yield curve was inverted by 29 basis points, was continuing to invert further, and had been negative for over three and a half months. If the Fed is right this time, the recession of 2007 is already baked into the pie. Those speculative positions may have to be unwound very fast.

I'm in the O'Neil growth stock camp. Saw the major indexes rise over 1.7% at the end of today on higher volume than yesterday, which for my camp means a possible turnaround. I had dumped in about 1/5 my account into a stock earlier this week when perhaps I shouldn't have, but it played out so far, got a big gain. I read one piece of news that the interest rate would hike 1/4% but may be the end of it.

Anyway, just curious what you folks using other strategies are thinking.... as was going to bump up my position after I read the news later tonight.

We are experiencing a global market meltdown.

How can people make consistent profits without depending on the beached whale public institutions?

There is only one answer.

Active trading in the currency and commodities markets with a high probability of profit.

I discuss this subject at great length in the blog on my website.

http://www.dcgfinancial.com

This is not a sales pitch because I have nothing to sell.

Financial advice is exactly that. It is advice.

When you learn for yourself that my advice is superior to that of others. When you learn that you can make more money with your money than a registered Merril Lynch financial advisor like my wife.

Then we may discuss compensation .

No contract, no lawyer, no corporate fraud.

This is the independent currency market research of one person hereby offered to another.

I am not a licensed broker. I am a trader, a programmer and a statistician. I solve problems using the scientific method.

Maturity is the ability to make decisions based on your own thoughts information. Don't you think it is about time we take a more mature approach to money? Don't you think that as an adult subject to the tides of the markets you should have a clear understanding of all of the financial markets?

I do. I want to share this with you. Because you are a resident of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and that is my community. When the community is at risk its members must come together in the defense of the community. The San Francisco Bay Area is filled with people with great minds and decent incomes. People with mediocre minds and towering financial powers want to remove us from our income.

Successful currency traders are the robin hoods of finance. We are literally making money by predicting the emotional behavior of the major banks. Let's do this.

http://www.dcgfinancial.com

Start the discussion that can afford you the rest of your life.

After social security is gone, after the market has crashed, after your IRA is stolen and after the dollar has lost all its value on this planet earth, good traders will still be making money make money.

Hello tribesters; would like some feedback on this. I have one through my work - a friend of mine quit her job and pretty much cashed out her 401k - i think she may have gotten 3 or 4 thousand out of 7 thousand. Here's my question:

Have any of you cashed out your 401k's after quitting a job, and what did you use it for? is this a good way to get money when needed? i know they are supposed to be for retirement, but what if i want to buy a condo or something (or pay my credit cards). Thanks in advance for the input.

STB Chip Showcases the World's First Rechargeable Smart Battery (MPB 4000)
for Mobile Phones and Mobile Devices at Consumer Electronics Show 2005

SEOUL, KOREA—(PR Newswire)—January 7, 2005—STB Chip Corporation (STBX: PK), a smart battery chipset company, has developed the world’s first portable cellular phone-use smart battery pack that extends talk-time battery life for mobile handsets by 800 percent. The company will showcase products at the Consumer Electronics Show 2005 beginning January 6 in Las Vegas, NV.

The technology users can charge their cellular phones or other mobile devices while on the move, regardless of where they are. The smart battery pack, with an estimated lifecycle of five years, will sell at $60 per pack.

MPB 4000, about the size of a mobile handset, is a high capacity portable rechargeable battery system. The lithium-ion cell portable battery pack has power capacity of 4,600-mAh, about fourfold the 1,000-1,300-mAh capacity of regular rechargeable battery of cell phones. The greater the capacity, the longer the battery life.

The product is a smart battery that displays an accurate amount of reserve energy held by the battery. Customers can tell how much power remains in the battery pack by the light-emitting diode (LED) battery power gauge.

Equipped with an integrated circuit (IC) microchip, MPB 4000 identifies its chemistry and tells the charger which charge algorithm to apply while protecting the battery from overcharging, under-discharging and short-circuiting.

``Demand for external rechargeable battery packs will surge in the future as countries launch digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) services. As current rechargeable batteries only support roughly two hours of continuous use time, DMB phone users definitely feel the need for a portable battery pack that extends the battery life of their handsets,’’ said Sung Ki-suk, CEO of STB Chip.

``U.S. companies and service providers have shown significant interest in our product. Japanese mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo has also expressed interest in purchasing our new products with an initial order of approximately 60,000 units,’’ Sung added.

Sung expects to export as many as one million units of the portable mobile battery pack to North America and Northern Europe next year. The company is currently in negotiations with large discount chain stores in the USA.

Negotiations are not going well, Caterpillar is setting up to not let any union employees cross picket lines this time and are installing bullet proof glass in executive windows that face the streets as I write - could be a rough period. You decide how the markets will react - I already have made my guess.
